The University of Rhode Island Guitar Festival

Posted

The University of Rhode Island Guitar Festival provides artists, students, aficionado, and music lovers from around the world the opportunity to exchange ideas, inspire novel musical approaches, and perpetuate love for the guitar, plucked instruments and their diverse and culturally varied music. The guitar is perhaps the most universal instrument on the planet; we harness its popularity and appeal to unite the Rhode Island, New England, domestic and international communities.

This year’s festival is unique in so far as all the programming will be 100% HYBRID, so you can enjoy the concerts, masterclasses, and lectures from the comfort of your own home with a beverage and snack of choice, or you can join us at the festival in-person in one of our venues, including URI Fine Arts Building, St.Augustine’s Church, and Pump House Music works.

Additionally, for the fifth year, we are offering the Rising Stars International Virtual Competition in two categories: Youth (ages 12-17) and Young Artists (ages 18-35). For the first year, we are offering The Rising Stars Young Guitarists Program, an educational workshop that focuses on guitar ensemble and technique and musicianship workshops for students ages 7-17.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
