As the state DEM continues to grapple with the redevelopment of the former Chase Marina property at 169 Riverside Drive, local officials remain hopeful that a collaborative approach will bring progress — and town officials plan to reach out to the state to help re-start discussions on the property’s future.

The state acquired the marina for $720,000 in October 2021, acquiring title to the property as it worked to rebuild the Sakonnet River Bridge. Previously managed by the state Department of Transportation, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) initially invited redevelopment proposals for the site more than two years ago, proposing it be redeveloped into a premier port, fishing, and commercial facility by 2025. However, the building remains empty and deteriorated from years of neglect.

Local frustration is growing among Harbor Commission members, town officials, and residents due to the marina's neglected state and its impact on the waterfront. Harbor Commission president Bruce Cox and vice chairman Dave Stewart are drafting a proposal to present to the DEM, which will incorporate input from local officials and residents. They said their goal is to ensure that future redevelopment reflects the community's interests, including potential businesses, restaurants and attractions that could benefit Tiverton.

"Tiverton residents and representatives from the appropriate town commissions should be actively involved in planning for this significant state-owned waterfront property," Stewart said. "It has been idle for too long, and this is our chance to realize its full potential."

Since the property is state-owned, any new businesses interested in relocating to the marina will need to negotiate lease agreements with DEM. Previously, the former Chase Marina was home to three businesses with space for offices as well as 20-plus recreational boats.
