The Barrington Fire Department responded to a gas main leak on Tiffany Circle on Thursday, May 2, at 11 a.m.

According to residents in that neighborhood, a contractor was attempting to connect a home to the gas main. A Barrington Fire Department official said the contractor struck a four-inch distribution line and forced the evacuation of several homes nearby. Firefighters also checked for the presence of natural gas in the basements of homes in that neighborhood.

“We deployed hose streams to help disperse the natural gas to keep it from concentrating in the immediate area and to reduce the likelihood of ignition,” the fire department official said.

Sections of Tiffany Circle and Lincoln Avenue were shut down for hours while Rhode Island Energy crews worked to contain and then repair the gas leak.
