The Warren Town Council approved a $4,000 stipend to be paid for the completion of a mural on the bathroom vestibule located at the Warren Town Wharf during their meeting on May 9.
The small shipping container will be painted on the east, south, and north sides, as the side facing the Warren River to the west was deemed inaccessible to safely paint.
The Warren Arts and Culture Commission, in its role to choose the artist who will paint the mural, announced on Monday that they had selected Warren resident Deborah Baronas to complete the work, which will commence in early June.
“This imagery will include reference to Warren’s rich textile and maritime history, ” Baronas said in a press release on Monday.
Previous works by Baronas include installations at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol, Roger Williams University, the Rhode Island State Police barracks, as well as ongoing projects at the Rhode Island Department of Veterans Affairs, the RI Army National Guard headquarters in East Greenwich, and the New Hampshire National Guard in Pembroke, NH.
Per the press release: Ms. Baronas earned a BFA in textile design at Rhode Island School of Design and worked in the textile industry for many years in New York City, Los Angeles, and Europe. More recently, she has focused on public art projects and installations that incorporate American historical themes based on work and culture.
