Warren woman attacked by son remains in critical condition

Friends set up GoFundMe page to help defray expenses

A Warren woman who police say suffered a brutal hammer attack at the hands of her son two weeks ago remains in critical condition, and friends of the family have set up a GoFundMe page (Warning: graphic image) to help cover medical expenses.

Sandy Mendes, 53, is in the hospital being treated for severe damage to her skull, and has lost an eye. She may lose another, and the loss of blood has weakened her kidneys and liver, said her friend Sandy, who organized the page.

Police said Ms. Mendes was attacked by her son, Kevin M. Mendes, 34, on Monday, May 24, at the home they share at 22 Birchswamp Road. Mr. Mendes is being held without bail on a charge of domestic assault with intent to commit murder.

Friends said Ms. Mendes, who has worked in the medical field and spent nearly 20 years at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in New Bedford, does not have health insurance.

"Sandy gave everything she could to those in need," Sandy said. "She is one of the kindest, hardest working and most dedicated people I know. She would always help someone in need, and now she is the one in need."
