A residents' group formed to promote a Proposition 2 ½ override for Westport has established a website and Facebook page for residents to gather information and discuss the issues surrounding a coming proposal for an override this spring.

The website was created by the Override Ballot Question Committee, and is an evolving place for facts, questions and answers about the override. Information will continue to be added as it develops over the next few weeks leading up to Town Meeting on May 2 and to a potential vote on the override.

Residents' questions will be answered on the group's Facebook page. Announcements about new items on the website and upcoming informational meetings will also be posted there.

Proposition 2 ½ is a Massachusetts law that took effect in 1982. it limits the total town tax levy to a 2 ½ percent increase, plus new growth, each year. The law allows towns, if the town finds revenue is not keeping up with expenses, to raise the tax levy above the 2 ½ percent via an override.

Westport will likely seek a $3 million override this year, and the committee is providing information to help voters make an informed decision.
