Westport honors veterans, fallen Monday

Posted

Westport will mark Memorial Day with a parade and ceremony this coming Monday, May 29. The parade begins with a wreath laying, rifle salute and the playing of Taps at the World War I monument in front of Westport Town Hall.

Once marchers step off around 9:30 a.m., the route proceeds south along Main Road to the Beech Grove Cemetery. Carol Freitas, the town's veterans' service officer, asked that residents support local veterans and those who have sacrificed their lives in the Armed Forces, to line the parade route as a show of support.

At the parade's end, a ceremony will be held at the Veterans Monument at Beech Grove. Above, an honor guard leads the way during last year's parade.
