Defending champion Tigers clobber CF/BVP Co-op 16-1

The Tiverton softball team clobbered Central Falls/Blackstone Valley Prep 16-1 in three innings, during a Division 3 home game on Friday evening. The 10-1 defending champs have won seven in a row and have outscored the opposition by a whopping 158 to 22.
“We’ve been feasting on pitchers that don’t change it up,” said Tigers head coach Mike Brigham. “We got a new batting cage and it’s been a god-send. The girls have been hitting in the cage every day and it shows. It’s been paying off.”
The Tigers slugged 16 hits, a pair of homers and six more extra-base hits, during the onslaught. Senior Sara Poland, who bats third, has been mashing the ball for the Tigers. On Friday, Poland crushed a three-run blast over the centerfield fence. She also belted a triple, scored three runs and drove in four runs.
Freshman Morgan DiManno smashed an inside the park grand-slam home run to deep right-centerfield. Brooke Sowa belted a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Emma O’Shea and Bea Pimental each doubled, singled and drove in two runs. Freshman catcher Abby Gilfillen doubled, singled and drove in one run. Lia Doster and Carlie Martin each belted a pair of hits and Kelsey Conway had one hit.
They scored four runs in the first, ten in the second and two more in the third before the game was called due to the 10-run rule.

Tigers also pitching and playing well in the field
The Tigers have also been pitching well and have been playing well defensively this season, according to senior pitcher Lia Doster. The infield consists of Sowa at shortstop, Poland at second base, Martin at first base, Khloe Jackson third base and Abbie Gilfillen behind the plate.
Doster who began pitching as an eight-year-old, threw for Coach Brigham at Tiverton Middle School and began pitching for the varsity as a freshman. She was only needed to strike out three during Friday’s game. The senior yielded just one hit and one run in three innings of play. She said that the Tigers have a strong bond on and off the field.
“We hang out a lot outside of softball,” she said. “The team works really hard and we have a great team bond.”
“Lia keeps the other teams off balance,” Coach Brigham said. “She has four different pitches, including a strong fastball and a real nice screwball, that she can throw for strikes.”
Coach Brigham said that she gives up a good amount of weak ground balls and soft fly balls that the defense can convert into outs.
“I’m not the fastest pitcher,” she admits, “So batters make contact off me and I can always trust my fielders to make the plays behind me.”
Doster also feels that the team is good enough to repeat as division champs.
“It would be great to do it again. Especially because it’s senior year,” she said.
Tiverton has nine games left to the season and host Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and travel to Middletown on Friday at 4 p.m.
