Recount requested in Little Compton council race
Rego, out by five votes, challenges her sixth place finish
The long, close race for the final seat on the Little Compton Town Council is not over yet — the sixth place finisher, five votes out of the running, has asked for a recount.
Maureen Rego, a Republican who finished with 973 votes to Democrat Andrew Iriarte-Moore's 978, requested the recount Wednesday. State Board of Elections workers in Cranston will meet Friday morning to vote on whether to accept the recount request, as well as two others in Scituate and Cranston.
The recount request is the third twist in the race for the council's seat.
After voting closed last Tuesday, the original tally gave incumbents Robert Mushen (R), Gary Mataronas (R), Patrick McHugh (D), Paul Golembeske (R) and challenger Rego enough votes for the five open seats. And it left Moore, a two-term Democrat, two votes out of the running with 967 to Rego's 969.
But after additional drop box ballots were counted Thursday, Iriarte-Moore gained 11 votes to Rego's four, enough to leap-frog over her by five votes.
Rego could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
