PORTSMOUTH — An 18-year-old Fall River man has been charged after a single-vehicle rollover crash in Portsmouth left one juvenile with life-threatening injuries and injured two others, police said.
Michael A. Montanez Verdejo was arrested Sunday and charged with driving so as to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and two counts of driving so as to endanger resulting in physical injury, according to the Portsmouth Police Department.
Police said the crash occurred around 9:44 p.m. on Saturday on Route 24 North near Cedar Island. Officers responding to the scene found a gray Toyota Camry registered in Massachusetts overturned on its roof in a wooded area off the roadway. A large construction traffic message board had been struck and was resting against the vehicle.
Four people were in the car, including Montanez Verdejo, who police identified as the driver, and three juvenile passengers. Two of the juveniles had exited the vehicle before officers arrived, police said. Montanez Verdejo and another juvenile passenger were trapped inside the overturned car, police said.
Officers reported a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and said multiple alcoholic beverage containers were found during the investigation. Firefighters extricated the two trapped occupants.
The unresponsive juvenile passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where the patient remained hospitalized as of Tuesday, police said. Montanez Verdejo was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment and also remained hospitalized. The other two juveniles were taken to Newport Hospital and later released.
In addition to the criminal charges, Montanez Verdejo was cited for driving with a suspended license, presence of an alcoholic beverage while operating a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana by a person ages 17 to 20, lane violations and speeding, police said.
Montanez Verdejo was arraigned by a justice of the peace and released after posting $5,000 bail with surety. He is scheduled to be formally arraigned Thursday, Dec. 18, in 2nd Division District Court.
The crash remains under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Department’s detective division and accident reconstruction team.
The Portsmouth Fire Department thanked mutual aid responders, including Tiverton firefighters, Boston MedFlight and Fall River Emergency Medical Services.
