The Tiverton softball team is headed to the finals after dispatching Mount St. Charles 4-1 in the Division III winner’s bracket final in Woonsocket on Tuesday night. The Tigers will play at RIC on Saturday at noon against the winner of loser’s bracket final between Mount St. Charles and Cranston East.

Senior Olivia Young blasted a solo homer in the first inning off Tigers’ freshman pitcher Lia Doster to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead. Mount St. Charles had previously beaten Tiverton twice during the regular season, so Tiger’s head coach Mike Brigham thought he would start the freshman who has a different release point.

It worked. Doster settled down nicely, striking out 2 and allowing 3 hits, 0 walks and 1 run in 3 innings of work. She gave way to junior Abbie DeMello who shut down the Mounties the rest of the way, striking out 5 and allowing just 3 hits, 2 walks and 0 runs in 4 innings of work.

Young pitching for the Mounties, kept the Tigers in check until the top of the fifth inning. Doster singled with two outs. Tiger’s center fielder Jersey-Ann Hastie stepped to the plate and belted a double off Young. Doster took off from first base and came around to score to knot the game 1-1. Leadoff hitter Devin Bordner singled home Hastie to give Tiverton a 2-1 lead.

Tiger’s senior Shortstop Sam Bettencourt led off the sixth with a bang, blasting a solo homer off Young to give Tiverton a 3-1 lead.

Cleanup hitter Abby Monkevicz singled and ran to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Eilish Condon singled her home to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

DeMello struck out 3 Mounties in the last two innings and the defense played stellar behind her. In the bottom of the sixth, Mounties shortstop Isabel Melanson singled and Young walked to give Mount runners at first and second. Melanson and Young attempted a double steal, but Condon, the Tiger’s junior catcher, threw to Sadie Pickering at third base and she tagged Melanson out. DeMello struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Mounties led off with a hit in the bottom of the seventh. DeMello struck out senior Caitlin Belisle and then got senior Chandra Morelli to hit a grounder to Mackenzie Oliveira who threw to Monkevicz for the second out. DeMello induced another grounder to Pickering at third base. She scooped it up and threw to Monkevicz to end the game.
