Tiverton held off Smithfield 7-6 in overtime, during a defensive Division IV home game on Friday night.

Tiverton struck first in overtime after the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation. Aiden Champ took the handoff from quarterback Ben Troia at the ten yard line and ran a sweep into the end zone for a touchdown to give Tiverton a 6-0 lead. Brendan Sowa kicked the extra-point to make it 7-0.

Smithfield scored on their second attempt to cut the lead to 7-6. The brash Sentinels went for two-points in an attempt to win the game, but the Tiverton defense thwarted the play and made the stop for the win.

“It was a great game and battle by both teams,” said Tiverton head coach Dillon Sheridan. “I am proud of the Tigers for never giving up and persevering. Our defense did a great job holding their offense. It was a competitive game all around.”

The win boosts Tiverton’s record to 3-1. The Tigers beat Juanita Sanchez 20-16 on 9/9, and Scituate 13-6 on 9/15, before loosing to Hope High School 26-7 on 9/23.

Next week the Tiger’s host Exeter West Greenwich-Prout Co-op on Friday, 10/6, at 7 p.m.
