Calling all artists for community art show

Posted

The Collaborative, true its name and mission, is putting out a call for submissions from artists of any expertise and skill level — from anywhere in the state — for a community art show that will debut at their 4 Market St. studio on Dec. 8.

“Most galleries have at least some panel or a person who selects the art for quality and fit. It’s essentially curated,” said Collaborative executive director, Uriah Donnelly. “We don’t think in those terms. I’ve always thought, ‘Who am I to decide what is good and what is bad?’ Art is subjective.”

Anybody practicing art in Rhode Island is welcome to submit up to four pieces of artwork (8 inches or smaller), for the non-juried show. Works can be 2D of all mediums or 3D, such as sculptures, ceramics, or metalworks.
“All submissions will be accepted,” said Sandy MacDonald, the Collaborative’s Gallery Coordinator. “All work must be non-functional and original by the submitting artist.”

The deadline for submissions is Friday, Nov. 18, and the show will be exhibited from Dec. 1, 2022 to Jan. 15, 2023. A small fee is required to submit, but there is no sales commission — so 100 percent of any sales made at the exhibit will go back to the artist.

“The real goal of this is to create a sense of community,” said MacDonald. “Artists, like myself, tend to work in silos, way apart from everyone else. So, this is a great opportunity to engage with other creative people in Rhode Island. The Collaborative aims to truly build a community of working artists and this highlights that effort.”

Donnelly said the show is a great opportunity for any artist who may have wanted to appear in a show, but felt like it was somehow out of their reach or potential.

“If you’re creative and interested in showing your work, we’re the place to do it, no matter where you’re from or what level you are,” he said. “You can be a world-famous artist or someone who just did it from home and never had the opportunity to show it anywhere.”
