DeWolf, Towers fuel Bristol-Warren all-stars to back to back wins

The Bristol-Warren Little League 12U all-stars shut out Newport 5-0 at Bristol Memorial field on Saturday and crushed Pawtucket 15-3 on the road on Sunday to earn a winner’s bracket quarterfinals game against Portsmouth at Sherman Field on July 9 at 5:45 p.m.

“Parker DeWolf and Michael Towers pitched great games,” said Bristol Warren head coach Steve Furtado who has been coaching his three sons through Warren Little League for 14 years. “Both boys are leaders and great batters that have unbelievable confidence at the plate.”

DeWolf struck out twelve in shut out

DeWolf, a right handed pitcher, struck out twelve batters, walked eight, hit a batter, but allowed just one hit and no runs in six innings during the team’s game against Newport on Saturday. Bristol-Warren scored four of their five runs in the second inning. Kyle Wiercinski singled to lead off the second. Coach Furtado had speedster Dylan Cote pinch-run for the center fielder. Ryan Thompson stepped to the plate and smashed a line drive to the left centerfield gap. Cote sped around the bases and slid safely over home plate to give Bristol-Warren a 1-0 lead. Thompson landed on second base with a double. The big hit seemed to distress Newport pitcher John Mancini as he promptly walked the next three batters. Thompson stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Casey and Travis Furtado who both walked, also ran the bases and scored on wild pitches to give Bristol-Warren a 4-0 lead. Mancini walked Eli Francis before striking out Reed Dubois for the first out of the inning. He settled and got DeWolf to pop up and he struck out Towers to end the inning.

DeWolf added a run in the fifth inning when he blasted a triple to the fence and scored on a wild pitch to give Bristol-Warren a 5-0 lead.

Bats awaken in game two

The Bristol-Warren offense pounded 17 hits and scored 15 runs in a ten-run rule shortened, four inning game, as they crushed Pawtucket 15-3 on Sunday night. Pawtucket particularly had trouble with the top of the lineup. The top four clubbed two homers and three doubles off Pawtucket pitching.

Lead off hitter Parker DeWolf smashed four hits scored four runs and drove in four runs and two hitter Michael Towers bashed three hits scored three runs and drove in four runs. Clean up hitter Blake Boughton singled, doubled, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Bristol-Warren scored five runs in the first inning, one run in the second, two in the third before breaking the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning. Towers hit a two run homer in the third inning with DeWolf on base to give Bristol-Warren an 8-2 lead and DeWolf crushed a grand slam in the fourth for a 14-3 lead.

Ryan Thompson also had two hits and Kyle Wiercinski, Kevin Casey, Dylan Cote, Travis Furtado Eli Francis, Dylan Scarborough Reed Dubois each had a hit during the game.

Defensively the team played well behind Towers who struck out six batters, walked three, allowed six hits including a homer and three runs in four innings. Infielders Dylan Scarborough and Eli Francis made terrific plays at third base according to Coach Furtado. Both players snared line drives on the third base line and threw runners out at first base. The fielding plays saved runs.

“Our fielding was incredible," said Coach Furtado. "Our bats finally came alive,” Coach Furtado said of game two.

Last year Bristol beat Portsmouth and ousted them from the tournament. This season, Portsmouth may be looking for revenge when the two teams meet in the winner’s bracket quarterfinals on July 9.

“Portsmouth will be tough,” Coach Furtado said. “They have great pitching and some great hitters. But if our bats stay hot, it should be a very good game.”
