(Updated Thursday, Sept. 24, 12:30 p.m.) The "Folk on the Farm" music festival scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, has been cancelled as a precaution in anticipation of a significant "Nor'easter" striking the area over the weekend.
Warren Holiday Festival co-chair Elwood Donnelly, whose organization took over operations of the folk event this year, said the event will not be rescheduled. A date for the next "Folk on the Farm" is already set, however, October 3, 2027.
The annual "Folk on the Farm" music festival remains on the community calendar in Warren with a couple of subtle switches this time around, the sixth edition of the event scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1-5 p.m. at Frerichs Farms on Kinnicutt Avenue and now operated under the auspices of The Warren Holiday Festival.
Folk at the Farm was created as a one-day folk festival at Frerichs by Uriah Donnelly, the former executive director of local arts and music incubator The Collaborative.
The festival began in October 2021 and immediately became a popular annual event, offering a full day of folk and acoustic music, food and art vendors.
In 2026, Warren Holiday Festival, the 501c3 non-profit that oversees the largest Christmastime event in town, was handed the reins in order to ensure that the fest would continue without interruption.
Warren Holiday Festival was able to acquire full sponsorship for the event from Blount Fine Foods, with all printing donated by East Bay Printing & Copying.
"Folk on the Farm is awesome. It's important to keep any meaningful community events going, this one in particular because it's one of only two events in town that I know of that truly brings the intersection of Warrenites together. Other events, intentionally or not, seem to be geared towards a particular group," said Uriah Donnelly, whose mother, Aubrey, and father, Elwood, are set to perform at the festival. Elwood is the chair of the Warren Holiday Festival organizing committee.
Uriah Donnelly was referencing the annual summer Warren Folks Fest, of which he was also one of the originators and that continues to be promoted by The Collaborative. It held its 10th anniversary event last month at its annual home of Cutler Mill.
"Also, because we lost David this year, I think it was important to continue it. He really liked the event and was excited when we initially brought the idea up," Uriah continued, noting the passing of the event's benefactor David Frerichs earlier this year. "And we would always donate a portion of the proceeds to the David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Fund for Barbara and David's son who passed away."
Followers of the festival will note a subtle name change, from "Folk at the Farm" to "Folk on the Farm." Organizers explained it was done for "technical reasons," although there have been no material alterations. The event remains the same: a full day of live music and more vendors than ever.
Of most importance, Folk On the Farm is still a free event to attend for all. The only meaningful switch was that of the date, from mid-October to late September.
The following bands are set to perform, in order of appearance: 1 p.m. - Catnip Junkies; 2 p.m. - Atwater-Donnelly Trio; 3 p.m. - How’s About Charlie; 4 p.m. - arc{hive} house band.
"The only big difference operationally, as far as I know, is that they won't be doing the beer garden any more," Uriah added. "I think Holiday Fest is trying to gear more towards families for this, similar to their wonderful tree lighting event in November."
