BRISTOL — The Mt. Hope High School soccer clubs split an afternoon-evening doubleheader at the Vendituoli Complex Thursday, Oct. 3, the girls falling to rival Barrington 4-0 in the opener and the boys extending their undefeated start to 2024 with a 3-1 win over Smithfield.

In the first game, Olivia Morrissette netted a hat-trick for the visiting Eagles, who improved to 3-4-3 in Division I outings and 4-4-3 overall on the fall. The Huskies, who were coming off a 2-0 victory on the road in Smithfield earlier this week, dropped to 4-5-0 overall and in the division.

In the nightcap, the Mt. Hope boys won their seventh game in a row and remained unbeaten in 11 total to date after beating their guests from Smithfield by a pair.

Cole Tavares was credited with seven saves in net for the Huskies. Lucas Anderozzi put the locals on top 1-0 at the break with an assist by Aidan Hudak. The Sentinels tied the score early in the second half off a corner kick. Hudak, himself, then scored twice over the final 40 minutes. Diego Gomez assisted one of the tallies as Mt. Hope improved to 8-0-3 both overall and in Division II games.

According to MHHS head coach Tucker Shepard, Smithfield began the game on the front foot, controlling play for the first 15 minutes. But like they did in their 4-2 win over St. Raphael earlier in the week, the Huskies found their footing at about that time, "started to relax and move the ball around," Shepard said.

The initial amount of possession led to Andreozzi's tally, which came on a shot from about 30 yards out. Following the tying tally by the Sentinels, Shepard called the exchange between Gomez and Hudak leading to the latter's first goal, a "great combination play." Hudak completed the sequence with a one-timer to put the locals back on top. A bit later, Hudak made it 3-1 with a shot from just outside the 18.

Girls' volleyball
The MHHS girls' volleyball team continued its winning ways, upping its recent run of victories to three in a row after defeating North Smithfield, 3-1, Thursday night, Oct. 3.

The Huskies upped their overall record to 6-5 with their 27-25, 26-28, 25-27 and 25-21 win over the Northwomen. Mia Hanson had 22 digs for the locals, Abby Allen 13 kills and six blocks, Lillian Konz made 26 saves with four aces and also added three kills while Sarah Wilcox had four aces and 16 assists.

"It was a big win tonight. It’s coming together," said MHHS head coach Lisa Lunney's whose still injury and illness depleted squad has nonetheless gained traction in recent days. "People are stepping up, finding their fire."

Girls' tennis
The MHHS girls' tennis team suffered its second 7-0 loss in as many Division I outings after the Huskies fell to host LaSalle in Providence Thursday afternoon, Oct. 3.

The locals dropped to 2-6 in the league standings with the defeat. Each of the matches ended in straight sets. Elena Oliveira managed a pair of games in her outing at second singles for the Huskies. Emma Alice Caetano won three in her match at third singles.

KMS soccer
The Kickemuit Middle School boys' soccer team maintained its undefeated record to begin the fall as the locals defeated Warwick Vets 4-1 Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Gabriel Neagle had two goals for KMS. Kobe King and Colin Kiselka had one apiece. Mason Reis assisted on two of the tallies. Andrew Vieira and Cody Matos split time in the Huskies' net, making four and two saves, respectively. KMS improved to 6-0-4 at the time.

The KMS girls, meanwhile, won their 10th game without a loss after the Huskies defeated Moses Brown by a 4-0 score on October 2.

Brooke Avila scored twice for the locals while Mya Salvatore and Genevieve Rolando added one each. Avila and Salvatore had one assist apiece. Pereira made nine saves.
