The last gasp of Hurricane Ida, making its way up through the Northeast after devastating various parts of the country throughout the past week, gave some Warren businesses and residents a rude awakening on Thursday morning, as the torrential rain flooded businesses and homes along Child Street.
Billy Destefano, who owns No Shame Racing on Child Street, shared photos of himself standing in a foot of water earlier in the morning. Thankfully, the water didn't quite make it up to the bay of his garage. The owners of Newport Auto Body one block down from Destefano, however, were not so lucky. Workers could be seen pushing water out of the garage bay, which had been under six inches of water earlier in the morning, according to an employee of the garage.
Across the street, a sump pump was expelling countless gallons of water out of a basement from a residence at 193 Child St., owned by Manny Rezendes. At the time of this observation, around 11:00 a.m., Mr. Destefano said it had been running at that volume since at least 5:30 a.m.
"I haven't seen anything this bad since Sandy," he said, referring to the superstorm that hit the region in 2012.
The waters encroached on side streets in the area, with Ward Street in particular under at least six inches to a foot of water.
