Congrats to the teachers, administration, parents and, especially, students on the latest RICAS scores! The numbers could not be more encouraging. Growth and actual scores are up, and moving in the right direction.

Is there work to do? Of course. This rising tide didn’t lift all boats. There are schools and areas of study that need extra attention, and until we consistently get to “Best in State” as a District, we need to stay focused, and double down on this progress. A primary rule of organizational measurement is, when things are improving, stay the course, and focus on the areas needing growth. Our Strategic Plan gives us the framework to do just that.

Now is not the time for non-educators to be inspecting individual teachers and courses, and far worse, to be inspecting individual libraries and books. We need, more than ever, to stay in our lanes. Let the educators educate, and enable the kids to discern their paths with the guidance of their parents, and with the School Committee providing the districtwide resources for all to thrive.

We’re on the path to the high academic achievement we all look forward to. Let’s keep it going!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
