The Mt. Hope High School girls' soccer club opened last week with a 4-2 victory over host Moses Brown in Providence on October 13, cementing their spot in the upcoming Division I state championship tournament.
The Huskies led 2-1 at intermission, then doubled their edge over the final 40 minutes against the Quakers. Sara Nencka scored a goal, her team-leading 14th of the fall, and added a pair of assists for MHHS.
Macy Brodd, Kendra Ascoli and Alaina Enes accounted for the other tallies. For Ascoli and Enes it was their first goal of the season. Olivia Overy also had a helper. Catherine Frawley made two saves while making her debut in net for the locals in the stead of injured starter Moira Ware.
Mt. Hope improved to 5-4-3 overall at the time and sat sixth in the D-I power rankings used to determine playoff seeding heading into the final week of the regular season.
"I've been very pleased with how we've been playing," said MHHS head coach Kerri Giarrusso. "We're focusing on these last three games to solidify a solid playoff seeding. We're working hard, continuing to gel and improve."
The Huskies play on the road against Prout Saturday, Oct. 17, then travel to North Kingstown Tuesday, Oct. 20, before finishing their slate Thursday, Oct. 22, at home in a return game with Prout at Roger Williams University.
Boys' soccer
The MHHS boys' soccer squad stepped away from Rhode Island competition to face nearby Durfee, traveling to face the Hilltoppers in Fall River, Mass., and coming back with a 4-0 setback.
Durfee plays at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I level, so despite the loss it didn't negatively affect the D-II Huskies' in-state power ranking.
Mt. Hope closed out the week by playing visiting and first-place Smithfield to a nil-nil draw, the third scoreless tie for the Huskies this season. Cole Tavares made three saves and Andrew Vieira seven in net for the locals.
The Huskies saw their record move to 5-3-6 at the time and allowed them to move into fourth place in the league power rankings as they head towards the final week of the regular season. It was the first draw to date for the Sentinels, who sat atop the D-II standings with a 12-2-1 mark.
MHHS head coach Tucker Shepard noted the Huskies are just about fully healthy as the ready for the league playoffs, adding he was pleased the team's performance this past week and more recently in general.
"We had our best week playing wise and the boys listened to what the game plan was and executed everything great," Shepard said. "We're playing the right way at the right time of the season. The boys know the goal and the expectation at this point in the season."
Girls' volleyball
The MHHS girls' volleyball team earned an important late regular season victory to open last week as the Huskies seek one of the last of 12 berths into the Division I state championship tournament next month.
The locals swept South Kingstown, 3-0, by the scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-12. Margaret Thorp served for 19 aces while not erring on any of her attempts from the line for the Huskies. She also had eight kills and eight digs. Maya Costa added six kills and five digs. Vivienne Noonan chipped in three kills and three blocks.
Mt. Hope fell to host Prout, 3-1, to close week, the host Crusaders winning by the scores of 25-13, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-19. Thorp had eight kills, kills digs and an ace for the Huskies. Stella Hill added five kills, two blocks and an ace as well.
Girls' tennis
The 2026 season didn't necessary go as wished for by the MHHS girls' tennis team in terms of victories, but the Huskies were very much competitive playing in Division II this fall after spending the last few years struggling in D-I.
And Mt. Hope ended '26 on an up note, winning its final match with those returning to the program being able to take a positive into the offseason.
"We are truly lucky to have such a great group of girls season after season and I think other teams at Mt. Hope see what a great group of girls we have and that has helped attract more players to tennis," said MHHS head coach Nolan Ross.
He continued, "That’s what we want to do is grow the game and we have been lucky and I feel lucky that I get to share the love I have for this game with this group of student athletes. This is without doubt one of the most challenging sports to play mentally and physically, and I don’t think that gets a lot of recognition. So having a group of athletes who can stay so positive and supportive of one another is special."
Ross also acknowledged the contributions of his assistant coach Sara Sousa, "who has been an amazing support for myself and the team over the last few years and really has been a huge part of the positive culture we have on the team."
