Portsmouth High girls are tops in 4-team gymnastics meet

Patriots defeat Middletown, Mt. Hope, and Rogers/East Providence

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School gymnastics team continued its impressive season by winning a four-team meet at Strive Gymnastics in Somerset on Saturday.

The Patriots came out on top with 133.75 points, edging Middletown, which collected 133.3. They were followed by Mt. Hope (119) and Rogers/East Providence (93.4).

Rowan Snyder was the top Patriots scorer in the all-around, collecting 33.95 points. She scored an 8.6 on the vault, and 8.5 on the bars, and 8.1 on the beam, and an 8.75 in the floor exercise.

Sierra Bonoff’s all-around score was 32.55: 8.2 (vault), 7.9 (bars), 8.55 (beam), and 7.9 (floor).

Briana Silva collected 31.6 points in the all-around: 8.0 (vault), 7.5 (bars), 7.9 (beam), and 8.2 (floor).

Nora Cooney also competed in all four events for a 31.15 score in the all around. She scored as follows: 8.35 (vault), 6.4 (bars), 8.0 (beam), and 8.4 (floor).

Other impressive scores from PHS athletes at the meet:

• Kayla Oliveira: 8.95 for the beam

• Gabriella Randazzo: 8.6 for the vault

• Madison Both: 8.4 in both the vault and the beam

• Caitlyn Wordell: 8.35 for floor

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
