Kayak capsizes in strong current, firefighters rescue woman

Kayakers were trying to navigate under the bike path bridge

Barrington Firefighters rescued a woman whose kayak capsized on the Palmer River under the bike path bridge Thursday morning, Sept. 15.

According to Barrington Fire Department Captain Jason Fanion, two women were in a kayak on the Palmer River and attempted to paddle under the bike path bridge.

A strong incoming tide caused the kayak to turn broadside against one of the bridge pylons, Capt. Fanion reported to the Times. The kayak then flipped and sank.

“One female was able to make it to shore and call 911 while the other was clinging to the pylon in the water,” Capt. Fanion reported.

Firefighters from Barrington and Warren quickly responded to the scene. Barrington Fire Department’s Marine 3 launched and firefighters were able to rescue the woman in the water. They brought her back to shore for a medical evaluation by the Warren Fire Department. Capt. Fanion said both kayakers refused medical aid.

“All parties involved are OK,” Capt. Fanion added.

He said the current is particularly strong in that area — he said it is a very dangerous spot to try and navigate on a kayak.

The rescue took place at about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15.
