The Warren Department of Public Works (DPW) has been busy throughout the summer, taking advantage of good weather and a bump in part-time employment help to tend to trees along the Main and Water Street corridors that, according to DPW Director Brian Wheeler, needed some TLC.
“We haven’t actually planted any new ones as of yet, we have just been paying more attention to some that were planted over the past few years,” he said. “A lot of the trees in Town have been long overdue for a pruning and we have had great weather and a crop of part timers that have made it possible to address for the first time in years.”
Wheeler said that tree pits were being filled with stones as opposed to mulch, as the latter has shown to wash out quickly following rainstorms.
“The stones have been holding up much better,” he said.
Wheeler said that as many as 50 tree pits have already been tended to, and that the department plans to address as many as they can while the weather permits.
“The end goal will be to have all tree pits looking uniformed with the stone in them,” he said.
