Weather forces Warren's senior picnic inside, but spirits remained high

Posted

With all the talk and concern about nearby tornadoes and an advancing hurricane, the powers that be at the Warren Senior Center decided to play it on the cautious side and move their annual outdoor senior picnic, originally scheduled for the Bristol Town Beach Pavilion last Thursday afternoon, to the spacious Warren Senior Center on Libby Lane.

“It was the right thing to do,” said Karen Emmes, East Bay Community Action Program Senior Nutrition Coordinator. “I know a lot of these people were concerned about the weather.”

Once everything was moved inside the Senior Center, the 75 or so people who attended gathered for a day filled with good food, and entertainment courtesy of nostalgic singer Kenny Marrocco, whose wonderful voice brought back memories of Frank Sinatra, Lou Monte, and Tony Bennett, among others from a by-gone era.

Led by Senior Center kitchen manager Ann Primiano and a number of dedicated volunteers, the seniors feasted on cheeseburgers, salad, barbecued roasted chicken, buttered corn, sliced watermelon, and ice cream.

“Thanks to everyone who made this all possible today,” said recently-retired Senior Center Executive Director Betty Hoague. “I know everyone had such a great time.”
