The Westport girls' and boys' basketball teams beat Holbrook on Thursday night.

Freshman forward Skylar Rezendes scored 20 points as the girls thrashed Holbrook 48-14 in a league home game. The Wildcats have won four straight, since losing a non-league game to Case on December 27 and are currently 8-1.

“I am very impressed with Skylar,” said head coach Jen Gargiulo. “Every practice she commits to working hard. She is extremely coachable and her game is really going to another level.”

Rezendes in her first year with the varsity, is giving the Wildcats an inside presence and scoring threat as they strive to get better this season. She also pulled down 10 rebounds and made a steal during the game.

The Wildcats are also getting better play from guards Korynne Holden and Julia George. The speedy pair combined for ten steals during the Holbrook game and led the team down the court during fast breaks.

Holden, a senior co-captain, scored 11 points, made 5 steals, grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out 2 assists. George scored 2 points, dished out 11 assists, grabbed 5 rebounds and made 5 steals.

“Korynne and Julia are playing really well together. They play tenacious defense and they facilitate our offense.” said Coach Gargiulo. “The team has really committed themselves to pushing each other in practice and it’s translating into success.”

Senior co-captain Meghan Molloy, a forward, scored 6 points. Sarah Perry, also a senior co-captain scored 5 points and sophomore Jenna Egbe scored 4 points.

“The team is playing well,” Coach Gargiulo said. “We are continue to work to play as a cohesive unit. I stress to the girls that the sum of our parts is key to success.

Boudria scores 37, as boys overtake Holbrook 62-61

Junior Owen Boudria scored 37 points as the Westport boys basketball team overtook Holbrook 62-61 in a league game at Holbrook on Thursday night. The win improved the Wildcats’ record to 4-6.

Boudria sank a free-throw to give Westport a 62-61 lead with 5 seconds left in the game. He missed the second purposefully, to keep the ball inbounds and run out the clock for the victory.

“When you get a big win, everyone has to play up to their potential and I think we did a good job of reaching that potential,” said Westport head coach Scot Boudria.

Westport was down 34-26 at halftime. Then Boudria took matters into his own hands, scoring 18 of his 28 second half points in the third quarter as Westport closed to 50-48.

The Wildcats star pulled down 14 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and made 5 steals and 3 blocks. He drained 4 of 5 free-throws down the stretch and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Boudria gave Westport their first lead of the game with fifteen seconds left, draining a pop-up jumper from eight-feet out. Coach Boudria called a time out and assistant coach Lloyd Aurora suggested the team use up some fouls to kill time.

It worked, but Holbrook got to the hoop and collected a foul with 7 seconds left.

The Bulldogs sank 1 of 2 free-throws to tie the game.

Westport inbounded the ball under the basket and again made a play for Boudria. But Holbrook fouled him and it cost them the game.

The supporting cast scored 25 points and earned kudos from Coach Boudria.

“Everyone contributed tonight, both offensive and defensively,” he said. “And Anthony Raposa and Max Gallant played incredible defense.”

Gallant, a junior guard, scored 9 points. Chris Duarte scored 8 points. Nick Stanton and Cole Boudria each scored 3, and Raposa scored 2.

“It was a solid team effort,” Coach Boudria said.
