Mike Messore is retiring. 

The longtime district employee will retire from his post as Barrington Superintendent of Schools at the end of the fiscal year. 

In a recent email to the Barrington Times, Messore wrote that he is committed to continuing his work as superintendent for the upcoming school year. He said his vision for retirement includes staying engaged and involved in education.

Messore said he decided to announce his upcoming retirement early in the school year as it would allow ample time for the Barrington School Committee to conduct a thorough search process for the next superintendent.

Messore has served 37 years in education — the last 24 years have been in Barrington, and the last 12 have been as Superintendent of local schools. 

On Aug. 24, at the staff’s opening day, Messore shared an important announcement with entire team of staff members. He told the group that he planned to retire at the end of the fiscal year. He thanked the staff members for their hard work and dedication to the students and families of Barrington during his tenure.

Messore said it has always been an honor to work with them. 

Messore and his family moved to Barrington in 1968, and he attended elementary school at Nayatt. He went to Peck School, before leaving the district to attend Providence Country Day School. 

Messore said he did his student teaching at Barrington Middle School in 1981, later taught at PCD and in Seekonk schools for about 10 years. 

He returned to Barrington schools as an administrator, working as an assistant principal and finally landing the district’s top administrative post as superintendent.
