Ava Lucas throws no-hitter for Barrington

The Barrington 12U All-Star softball team beat Tiverton 2-0 in the District II semifinal game at Tiverton High School on Tuesday night, June 27.

Pitchers Ava Lucas, for Barrington, and Liliana Luis, for Tiverton, battled in another pitching duel — the two starred in Tiverton’s 2-0 win on Thursday, June 22. This time Lucas and Barrington came out on top. The Barrington pitcher didn’t allow a hit while striking out 10 and allowing just three walks in six innings. Luis struck out nine and allowed five hits, three walks and two runs.

Lucas also provided offense for Barrington in the second inning. She belted a two-out triple to the left-centerfield gap and scored on a single by Grace Fontaine to give Barrington a 1-0 lead.

Keira Martin manufactured the second run, leading off with a walk. She stole second and third bases — she easily beat the throw to second and slid under the tag to reach third. Martin took a small lead off third and Tiverton catcher Abby Gilfillen threw down to third baseman Autumn Gerlach. The ball bounced off Gerlach's glove and Martin scampered home to give Barrington a 2-0 lead.

Tiverton had the bases loaded and runners at third base twice, but each time Lucas came back to end the inning with a strike out.

Barrington and Tiverton will play for the District II championship at Barrington High School on Wednesday, June 28, at 5:45 p.m.
