Eagles rally to defeat Smithfield in regular season finale

The Barrington High School boys basketball team defeated Smithfield 62-57 on Tuesday night, Feb. 14, and secured the number three seed heading into the Division 1 playoff tournament.

The Eagles improved to 13-5 in Division 1 and 15-7 overall.

Barrington received a first-round bye and will host a quarterfinal playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The Eagles will play the winner of Cumberland vs. Mount Pleasant. 

Barrington started off slowly in its final game of the regular season. Playing at Smithfield, the Eagles fell behind 14-7 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Barrington outscored the Sentinels 17-8 and carried a 24-22 lead into halftime. The Eagles expanded their lead by the end of the third quarter, 45-36.

Matt Raffa knocked down six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 30 points. Nick Scandura controlled the paint and scored 13 points. Sean Bonneau hit two key three-pointers to open the second half and finished the game with eight points. 

Ryan Rigamonti contributed valuable minutes off the bench and scored all six of his points in the second half of the game. Owen Pfeffer and Dan Coogan rounded out the scoring, finishing with three and two points respectively. Evan Anderson led the Eagles’ defensive effort and sparked the Eagles’ turnaround in the first half. 

Barrington finished its regular season play by winning its last four games and 10 of its last 12.
