Sowams School moves one step closer to National Blue Ribbon

Barrington Public Schools announced Friday, May 12, that Sowams Elementary School has been recognized as the newest Lighthouse School in the nation by Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.

According to a press release from the district, Sowams School met the required criteria for becoming a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School in nine performance areas: student focus and support, school organization and culture, challenging standard and curriculum, active teaching and learning, technology and integration, professional community, leadership and education vitality, school and community partnerships, and indicators of success.

“This recognition by Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence affirms the commitment of our Sowams School teachers, staff, and principal who have worked diligently to meet the diverse learning needs of students and create a safe and welcoming school environment,” stated the release.

Sowams School is the second school in Barrington to be named a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School, following Primrose Hill School’s award in 2022.

The award of Lighthouse School brings Sowams and Primrose one step closer to joining Nayatt, BMS, and BHS as National Blue Ribbon Schools.

Sowams School Principal Jim Callahan will be presented with the Lighthouse School award during the Blue Ribbon Schools Conference in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 1.

This designation lasts five years, at which point Sowams School will become eligible for renewal of the BRSE Lighthouse School recognition. As a Lighthouse School, Sowams School will also commit to sharing expertise and practices with local and national peers and providing mentorship to schools seeking assistance in school improvement initiatives.
