The Barrington High School girls soccer team is bringing the energy this season — the positive energy.
Head coach Sue Silva said this year’s team is focused on maintaining positive energy throughout the season, in practices and in the games.
“I’m really excited,” Silva said. “The positive energy — they’re all staying positive. Everyone’s working really hard.”
That high-energy, positive approach has played a role in the Eagles’ 1-1-1 record through the first three games. Barrington opened the season with a 2-1 win against Moses Brown, dropped a 3-1 decision to Mt. Hope, and tied Smithfield 1-1 on Thursday night, Sept. 10.
Silva, who played soccer at Springfield College, said her team’s mental strength will be important as the season wears on. She said the Eagles play hard no matter what the score is — whether they are winning or trailing.
“I think our biggest strength is we don’t give up. No matter what happens. No matter what the score is,” she said.
This year’s team boasts a strong senior class: Zoe Dyer, Kate Pierce, Molly Thurston, Maddie Kiely, Zoe Hatjopoulos, Ava Morrissette, Makenzie Lema, Reagan Pires, and Lilyana Filippo. Lema, Thurston and Kiely are the team captains this season.
“I’ve got great leadership from my senior class,” Silva said.
BHS senior Molly Thurston has been an active contributor on the offensive end of the field for the Eagles. Thurston scored both goals in Barrington’s win over Moses Brown, and assisted on Mckenna Pires’s goal against Mt. Hope. In the tie with Smithfield, Mckenna Pires gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage before the Sentinels tied it up late in the second half.
Silva said every player on the roster will fill a key role for the Eagles. She said all the team members, whatever year they are, will play an important role.
Sister act
It is a family affair this year for the Barrington High School girls soccer. Silva said there are three sets of sisters on this year’s team: Marissa Lema and Makenzie Lema, Reagan Pires and Mckenna Pires, and Kate Pearse and Emma Pearse.
Silva said sometimes it can get a little tricky coaching the sister pairs, but there are benefits too. She said typically, the siblings will look up to each other.
