Barrington High School students shine at RI Statehouse
Barrington’s Luke Van Ness and Samuel Spector win Advisors Award
On March 25, the Barrington High School Model Legislature Delegation met at the RI Statehouse for the annual mock legislative session.
Delegations from 11 schools throughout the state met to debate and vote on student drafted bills.
Previously, these bills went through mock committee meetings in order to be eligible for debate on the respective floor of the assembly; the Caucus Day, as the committee meetings are referred to, took place at Bishop Hendricken High School on Wednesday, March 22.
A student-directed event, the mock sessions took place in both the House and Senate chambers complete with students leading the proceedings in roles such as Speaker of the House, Party Leaders, Party Whips, and President of the Senate.
The event was punctuated by US Congressman David Cicilline delivering a keynote speech to the students to open the session, and was concluded with remarks from RI Speaker of the House, K. Joseph Shekarchi.
In addition to Barrington High School having the largest delegation in the state, two BHS delegates, Luke Van Ness and Samuel Spector, were awarded with the Advisors Award, which recognizes excellence in Parliamentary procedures, debate, and oratory.
