The Barrington High School boys hockey team defeated Smithfield 7-3 in a Division I playoff game on Monday night, Feb. 27.

The Eagles entered the postseason as the number eight seed, and faced off against ninth-seeded Smithfield.

Barrington opened the scoring 3:08 into the first period when Trevor Snow scored off an assist from Cody Wood. Tucker Squires made it 2-0 three minutes later. Snow assisted.

The first period ended with the Eagles up 2-0, and 33 seconds into the second period Chase Watts made it 3-0. Conner Hayes and Drake Almeida assisted. Smithfield made it 3-1 at the 8:10 mark of the second period, but the Eagles regained their three-goal lead 45 seconds later on Snow's second goal of the game. Squires and Almeida assisted, as the Eagles skated into the second intermission up 5-1.

Adam Gorman added a power-play goal two minutes into the third period. At the 2:40 mark, the Sentinels responded to make it 6-2, but the Eagles’ Henry Kelsey had an answer nine seconds later. Hayes and Watts assisted. The Sentinels would add one more, and the Eagles advanced to the D1 quarterfinals with a 7-3 victory.

With Monday night’s win, Barrington advances to the quarterfinals where it will face Bishop Hendricken in a best-of-three series. The Hawks are the number one seed in the Division I playoffs.

Hendricken finished the regular season with an overall record of 18-5-1, and a Division I record of 14-1-1.

Hendricken opened its season with a game against Barrington on Dec. 15 — the Hawks topped the Eagles 5-2. The two teams met a second time on Feb. 17, with Hendricken skating to a 4-1 win.

Barrington finished the regular season with a 6-9-1 record in the division and an overall mark of 9-13-2. While the team’s record was below the .500 mark, Barrington celebrated some notable victories, including a 2-1 win over LaSalle Academy on Jan. 27.

The quarterfinal series opens on Friday night, March 3, at Thayer Arena. The game starts at 6. Game two will be at Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday.

Win over Mount

Mount St. Charles has been playing in the Interscholastic League for 90 years. The Barrington High School hockey team celebrated their Golden Anniversary this season. In 50 years of Eagles hockey, and dozens of attempts, the Eagles had never beaten the Mounties. Until Friday night.

The Mounties came out flying and jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:39 into the opening period. Barrington goaltender Cam Siwik kept the Mounties at bay and the first period ended with the Mounties holding onto a 1-0 lead. At the start of the second period, the Eagles found themselves short a man and Mount on the power-play. But it was the Eagles penalty kill which capitalized and evened the score at 1 apiece. It was Watts’ third shorthanded tally and 11th goal of the season. Drake Almeida assisted. The Mounties would reclaim the lead four minutes later. As the period wound down, the Eagles got a power-play opportunity and at the 13 minute mark, Watts evened the score with his second goal of the night. Wood assisted. The teams skated into the intermission knotted up at 2-2. Mount took its lead back 4:50 into the third period, and took a 4-2 lead with 8:31 to play. Two minutes later Snow cut the Mount lead in half. Erik Hall assisted. The Mounties took a penalty with 2:44 left in regulation, and the Eagles made them pay for it. Snow tallied his second goal of the night; it was assisted by Wood.

The teams were heading to a five-minute sudden death overtime. The teams battled back and forth for the first 4:21 of the extra stanza until Mount was whistled once again for a penalty. Just eight seconds into the Eagles’ power-play, Almeida made a nifty pass to Kelsey who fired a shot which deflected into the back of the Mounties’ net and secured the Eagles dramatic come from behind victory.
