Marvelli finishes third in 285-pound weight division

Barrington High School senior Tommy Marvelli battled to a third place finish in the 285-pound weight division at the state championships on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The Barrington High School team had seven wrestlers competing at states and the team finished 12th overall. 

Marvelli opened the tournament on Friday, Feb. 24, with a win against Jaden Mercedes, of Davies Career and Tech Academy. Marvelli won by fall at 0:18. He then defeated Central’s Jhadiel Acosta, 8-0. In his first match on Saturday morning, Marvelli squared off against Woonsocket’s Alex Herrera. The Barrington standout lost by fall, at 1:03, but bounced back in his next match, defeating Toll Gate’s Tyrisse Volmar by fall at 1:15.

Marvelli then defeated Coventry’s Ason Jones by major decision to capture third place overall. 

Barrington’s Matt Zimmerman brought home a fifth place finish in the 195-pound weight division. Zimmerman opened the tournament with a win by fall at 5:14 over Narragansett’s Matt Nathaniel. Zimmerman then lost a 6-5 decision to Lincoln’s Aaron Bolduc. 

The BHS sophomore returned with wins over North Providence’s Ebrima Sinyan and LaSalle’s Alejandro Taylor. Zimmerman then dropped a 6-3 decision to Cranston West’s Vincent Merlino, but bounced back agains to defeat Bolduc in the fifth-place match. 

Barrington High School freshman James Rocco captured fifth place in the 145-pound weight division. Rocco started the tournament with a win over Ponaganset’s Damarien Ravenelle, and then lost to Scituate’s Gabriel Bouyssou. Rocco responded with a 5-1 decision over Smithfield’s Garrett Sala and a 12-5 decision over Coventry’s Elijah Silverman. After suffering a 13-6 loss to Central’s Aziz Mian, Rocco defeated Mt. Hope’s Mason Furtado 8-4 to finish fifth overall. 

At 182 pounds, Barrington’s Tyler Herrara grabbed a sixth-place finish. Herrara defeated Exeter West Greenwich’s Adam Aljallad, 7-0, but then lost to Cumberland’s James Titre by an 8-2 decision. 

Herrara then won back-to-back matches, defeating North Providence’s Cole Hosey by fall at 2:52, and Cranston West’s Caden Bruno by an 8-2 decision. In the fifth-place bout, Herrara lost to Pilgrim’s Trevor O’Connor. 

At 170 pounds, Barrington’s Jordan Henson went 1-2. Henson defeated LaSalle’s Justin Crossett, by fall, and then lost matches to Central’s Jefreel Rivera and Tolman’s DeMario Gonzalez.

Barrington High School freshman Henry McClelland also won a match at states, competing in the 160-pound weight division. After losing his opening match to Chariho’s Hudson Juenger, McClelland bounced back and defeated North Kingstown’s Damien Young, by fall at 1:30. McClelland lost his next match to Cranston East’s Charles Wall by decision, 9-2. 

Barrington’s Parker Hughes went 1-2 at states, competing at 138 pounds. Hughes lost his first match, by fall, to Hope’s Edmir Monteiro. Hughes then defeated North Providence’s Noah Riley by a 5-4 decision, and lost to LaSalle’s Tom Lynch by a 4-2 decision.
