Former YMCA director returning to town for book signing

Joe Martino will stop by Barrington Books on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. to read excerpts from his book “On The Run.”

Martino, who worked as the executive director at the Bayside YMCA for two decades, will also sign copies of his book at the event, which is open to the public.

“On The Run” offers a glimpse into Martino’s running world and the people he met through the sport: he was friends with Bill Rodgers, who won the Boston Marathon four times and competed in the 1976 Olympics. Jacqueline Hansen, a two-time world record-holder in the marathon shared praise for the book also.

Also, John Gillooly, former Providence Journal sportswriter, will discuss and sign copies of his book “Friday Night Thunderbolts — Why High School Football is Important to America’s Future” at a special event at Barrington Books on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
