Matilda Jr. The Musical set for the stage

BMS students perform four shows March 10-12

The kids at Barrington Middle School are ready to wow audiences with their performance of Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr. The Musical.

Performances will be held on Friday, March 10, at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a final performance on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. All performances will be held at Barrington Middle School.

“I have waited years to direct this play,” said Dena Davis, of Arts Alive! Barrington. “The message is so powerful and resonant, and my full heart and soul has gone into this story…”

Matilda Jr. The Musical tells the story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires — Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers. She is unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly lovable Miss Honey.

“Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules,” states the press release from Arts Alive! “But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!”

Tickets are general admission and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets will be available online at www.artsalivebarrington.org as well as at the door (cash only) before each performance.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
