Eagles knock off Ponaganset, Burrillville and Woonsocket

The Barrington High School baseball team won three times last week and improved its record to 7-3 in Division II-B.

The Eagles knocked off Woonsocket 12-2 on April 25, and Burrillville 3-1 on April 27. Barrington capped the week with a 7-6 win over Chariho on Saturday, April 29.

Coach Vin Scandura said his team showed poise battling back to defeat Chariho.

“This is our third walk-off win,” Scandura said. “East Proviedence, Tiverton and now Chariho.

“This team … this is by far the best defensive team I’ve ever had. And this is probably one of the highest baseball IQ teams I’ve ever had. When it comes to the game, they are prepared for any moment. They really are.”

Scandura said the team’s roster is filled with talented, confident players, from top to bottom. He said that deep 18-man roster results in very competitive practices.

“They’re a very confident team. They’re as competitive in practice as they are in games,” he said, adding that he could split his roster into two nine-man squads that would both qualify for the Division II playoffs.

“They compete in practice with each other,” he said.

Against Chariho, Ben Nowinski started the game on the mound for the Eagles and Jack Lawson came in for relief. Lawson pitched five and two-thirds and limited the Chariho lineup.

Owen Pfeffer started on the mound against Burrillville. Scandura said the sophomore struggled following a short rain delay, walking full the bases. Scandura called on Gabe Tanous, who got the next two batters to pop up and struck out the third, ending the Broncos’ scoring threat.

Eli Terrell led the way for Barrington at the plate. The senior ripped a double and also smashed a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles an early lead.

Scandura said Barrington’s defense made a number of key plays in the victory over the Broncos.

Barrington’s Harrison Cooley pitched a complete game in the Eagles’ win over Woonsocket.

The Eagles are scheduled to play at Johnson on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and at home against North Providence on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
