Monument signs emerge in downtown Barrington

Posted

Workers installed two new signs along County Road in Barrington late last week.

The vertical monument signs include the words “Barrington Town Center” and are reportedly part of the town’s way-finding initiative that was started years ago.

One of the monument signs stands on the traffic island near the intersection of County Road and Rumstick Road and the other is on the northbound side of County Road near Prince’s Hill Cemetery.

Barrington Town Manager Phil Hervey said the two monument signs along with two additional “vehicle directional signs” were included in the overall streetscape improvement plan drafted years ago.

The final version of the plan was finalized in 2019, Hervey said, and was reviewed by the town’s Economic Development Commission.

Installation of the signs was delayed because of the time it took to get the Rhode Island Department of Transportation physical alteration permit, as well as some supply chain issues, Hervey said.

Providence-based SurfaceMatter designed the signs. The company is a “multidisciplinary branding and environmental graphic design studio.”
