PORTSMOUTH — Last year, the Division II Portsmouth Patriots hockey team played admirably against Division I Barrington High in the annual Injury Fund exhibition game, losing by just a goal in the 3-2 contest.

The two squads faced each other in another Injury Fund game Sunday afternoon at Portsmouth Abbey, with much different results. This time the Eagles overwhelmed the Patriots, skating to an 8-0 shutout.

The real season doesn’t get underway until this Friday however, when the Patriots play the Narragansett/Chariho Boys Hockey Co-op team at 6:30 p.m. at Boss Arena at the University of Rhode Island.

They return home to face Ponaganset at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Portsmouth Abbey. Portsmouth will also host the South Kingstown/Westerly Boys Hockey Co-op team at the Abbey at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18.

The team will also participate in the annual game against an alumni squad at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at the Abbey. It will be a fun, pick-up style, no-checking game for bragging rights. Spectators are welcome and admission is free.

This season, forward Aidan Toner has been chosen as team captain, with forward Andrew Alvanas, defensemen James Lebreux, and Logan West selected as alternate captains. Greg Cunningham is head coach.
