PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High gymnasts are division champions for the first time in 18 years.
The Patriots captured the Division II title at the RIIL Gymnastics Team and Individual Championships held Saturday at Rhode Island College.
Portsmouth and division rivals Middletown both finished the regular season with 13-1 records, but when it counted most the Patriots came out on top, scoring 135.95 points as a team to the Islanders’ 131.675. Mt. Hope took third place with 127.8 points.
The Patriots were led by junior co-captain Rowan Snyder, who scored 36 points in the all-around competition. That was the fourth-best score in the entire state and qualified her for the New England Gymnastics Championships in the all-around as well as in all four individual events. That competition will be held in Northborough, Mass. on Saturday, March 9.
Snyder scored an 8.85 on the vault, an 8.9 on the bars, a 9.05 on the beam, and an impressive 9.2 in her floor routine. She scored in the top four among the state in every event except for the vault.
Freshman standout Roshana Webster also had a good day competing for the Patriots, scoring a 33.8 in the all-around (8.65 vault, 8 on the bars, 8.7 on the beam, and 8.45 on the floor). That put her in the top 15 in the state, and also qualified her for the New Englands in both the all-around competition as well as on the vault and the beam.
Sophomore co-captain Kiley Wordell scored a 33.05 in the all-around (8.55 vault, 7.75 bars, 8.25 beam, and 8.5 floor).
Payton Sousa-Duckworth, a freshman, managed a 31.95 in the all-around (8.25 vault, 7.2 bars, 8 beam, and 8.5 floor).
