Barrington police confirmed on Monday afternoon that the body discovered off Rumstick Point this weekend was in fact Stas Antons, the 47-year-old Barrington man who went missing on July 2.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said the Rhode Island Medical Examiner's office confirmed the identity, although officials have not yet determined a cause of death. Chief LaCross said he was not sure whether a cause of death would be made public.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Antons," said Chief LaCross.

"And the efforts of the volunteers who searched are greatly appreciated."

Chief LaCross said a private boater located the body near Rumstick Rock off Rumstick Point at about 2:42 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. Police and fire officials responded quickly to the scene and retrieved the body. The discovery appeared to end a 9-day search for the missing Barrington man.

Police said they received a phone call on Thursday, July 2 at about 5:30 p.m. after someone complained of an overdue boater. Police said Mr. Antons' wife had responded to the marina where the family keeps its boat and she had been transported to an empty boat which was anchored a few hundred yards off the beach in front of the golf course.

A team of volunteers, including officials from New England Search and Rescue, handled some of the search for Mr. Antons, an accomplished triathlete.

Initially, U.S. Coast Guard, Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, State Police, Barrington Police and Fire and Barrington Harbor Patrol scoured the area for any sign of Mr. Antons, but most of those agencies ended their search on Friday night.

NESAR officials joined the effort Saturday morning, July 4, and grew optimistic on Sunday after two cadaver dogs picked up a scent in the water just south of the Rhode Island Country Club property. The Barrington Fire Department launched its boat and a dive team out of Warwick scoured the area from about 5 p.m. until it was dark, but was unable to locate anything.
