Bicycles, tents, storage bins, empty propane tanks and other items were packed up on Monday afternoon, May 1, and ready to be removed from a homeless encampment inside Veterans Park.
Barrington Police have been stopping by the site to help pack up and move out the three homeless men who had been living there.
Monday was the official “move out” day — 2 p.m. was the deadline.
When police officers stopped by Veterans Park on Monday at 2, there was no one at the encampment.
Personal belongings had been packed into plastic storage totes and large trash bags. Some items were covered with tarps. There was also a futon bed frame, bicycles, empty five-gallon water jugs, propane tanks, a wheelbarrow, and other items scattered about the area.
One of the three men who had been living there is currently being held at the ACI intake center. Barrington Police said 27-year-old Samuel Lawson was charged with disorderly conduct on Thursday, April 27, following an incident at Barrington Town Hall. Lawson stopped into the Town Hall and allegedly yelled at people there. Town officials grew concerned and triggered an internal alarm. Police officers arrived shortly thereafter, but Lawson had fled the scene. Officers tracked him down in Veterans Park and took him into custody.
Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia said Lawson had violated his bail status on a previous drug charge. He was brought to the ACI and will be held there until his May 15 court date.
