Barrington’s Scott Sloan earned the title “National Champion” with a 206-foot, 6-inch throw at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor competition earlier this month in Philadelphia, Pa.

Sloan, who trains with Sean Furey of Furey Athletics in Barrington, opened with a throw of 180 feet, 5 inches, and followed that with a throw of 198 feet, 10 inches. 

Sloan’s best throw of the competition came in the third round with a distance of 206 feet, 6 inches. 

Sloan finished the day as one of only two competitors whose throws measured longer than 200 feet. Second place finisher Tyson Schiele, of Ontario, had a distance of 201 feet, 7 inches. The javelin competition featured more than 60 athletes. 

The strong showing earned Sloan a gold medal at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor, and also moved him into sixth place in the country for his age group, according to Athletic.net.

Sloan, who recently graduated from Wheeler School in Providence, is scheduled to compete next in the New England Jr. Olympics, followed by regionals and probably nationals.

Sloan committed early decision to Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., where he will be a member of the track team.
