PORTSMOUTH — A 29-year-old Portsmouth man, one of several suspects wanted in connection with a shooting in Newport on July 5, was arrested last week.

On Friday, July 12, Portsmouth Police officers were assisting Newport Police in the execution of a search warrant at a local residence when they observed Marc A. Washington, of 25 Leland Point Drive, leaving the home, according to police.

Officers attempted to pull him over, but Washington fled the scene, police said. Later, Middletown Police officers were able to successfully take Washington into custody at about 6:45 p.m.

While he was being processed, Washington was found to have suspected cocaine in his possession, according to police.

Washington was charged by Portsmouth Police with possession of a controlled substance; and reckless driving (eluding an officer in a motor vehicle during a high-speed pursuit).

Washington was one of multiple suspects wanted by Newport Police in connection with a shooting in that city on July 5. He was subsequently charged by Newport Police with conspiracy, compounding or concealing a felony, assault with intent to commit specified felonies, unlawful possession of a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a permit, according to police.

Washington was transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranson as a probation violator and was scheduled to have been arraigned in Newport District Court on Monday of this week.

Here are some other recent arrests made by the Portsmouth Police Department:

Thursday, July 11

Kevin Sylvia, 41, of 14 Riverside St., was charged with domestic breaking and entering into a dwelling house without consent; and violating a protective order, his third and subsequent offense. Officers made the arrest after responding to a Pearl Street home at about 4:35 p.m. to locate Sylvia, who was wanted in connection with violating a domestic no-contact order, according to police. Officers located him at a nearby residence and later determine he had entered into the residence unlawfully, police said. The victim was a 61-year-old woman who lives in Portsmouth, according to police.

Densy Raulin Vallejo, 33, of 184 Thompson St., Apt. 2, New Bedford, was charged with driving under a foreign license that had been suspended or revoked. Vallejo was arrested at about 7:15 a.m. following a motor vehicle accident on West Main Road at Crossing Court, police said. He was issued a summons to appear in 2nd District Court in Newport to answer the charge.
