Maude Smith-Montross finishes fifth in Women’s Single

Barrington was well-represented at the recent US Rowing Youth Nationals.

Eight Barrington residents who participate in the Narragansett Boat Club rowing program celebrated strong performances at nationals, which were held in Sarasota, Fla.

Maude Smith-Montross rowed to a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Single competition. Smith-Montross placed 12th out of 27 rowers in the time trial. The top-16 finishers advanced to the semifinals, where Smith-Montross earned a fourth-place finish in the “A finals.”

That landed Smith-Montross a spot in the finals. Seeded eighth overall, the recent Barrington High School graduate (she actually missed the June 9 commencement in order to compete at nationals) powered to a fourth-place finish.

Narragansett Boat Club’s Women’s U17 four-plus (four rowers and one coxswain) boat also shined at nationals. The boat, which included Barrington’s Maylie Conway and Amelia Collins (and Halsey Hallenback as alternate) surprised bigger boat clubs en route to a sixth-place finish overall.

Barrington’s Gianna Vigliotti and Zoe Ritter powered NBC’s Women’s U19 four-plus boat at nationals. The local rowers enjoyed a strong weekend and made the A finals, placing eighth nationally.

Narragansett Boat Club also had two boats qualify for the B final: the Women’s Double, which featured Barrington’s Minty Gaitskell, finished ninth, while Cassin Edgar-Smith finished 16th in the Men’s Single.
