Could a "three-peat" be in the cards for Barrington High School when it returns to compete in High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island?
Barrington, which has brought home the title in the first two years of the PBS program, was one of the eight teams that qualified to compete in this year's event.
The BHS team joined students from Hendricken, Classical, Coventry, East Greenwich, LaSalle, Lincoln and North Kingstown for "Super Saturday" filming in October. Subsequent rounds of the competition were filmed in November.
Rhode Island PBS will begin broadcasting the competitions this month — the competition will be aired every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for seven weeks on WSBE Rhode Island PBS, beginning Feb. 9.
“The spirit and enthusiasm of these students is a pleasure to watch, and their brightness speaks to the academic integrity of their schools,” said David W. Piccerelli, president of WSBE Rhode Island PBS. “We wish them luck as the competition gets underway.”
PBS will air North Kingstown against East Greenwich on Feb. 9, followed by Barrington against Lincoln High School on Feb. 16. Classical vs. LaSalle will be aired on Feb. 23, and Coventry vs. Hendricken will be aired on March 1.
The semifinal rounds air on March 8 and 15. The championship match airs on March 22.
High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island is a team-based, single-elimination competition. Teams are composed of four students and up to two alternates, with at least one adult coach.
Barrington High School's team includes Clara Kugler (11th grade), Douglas Meeker (12th grade), Eli Terrell (9th grade), Eden Lamb (11th grade), Connor O'Neal (11th grade) and Benjamin Lamb (11th grade). BHS math teacher Bob Marley coaches the team.
All Rhode Island public and private high schools were eligible and invited to participate.
The contest
To promote High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island and engage with viewers who might not otherwise have an affiliation with the competing schools, the audience is invited to play along by answering the “Question of the Week.” Contest submissions are accepted online through links on the show’s social media channels, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Correct answers will be entered into a Grand Prize Giveaway, held on Monday, March 30. Three bonus questions give viewers up to 10 chances to win the grand prize bundle, valued at up to $500.
