The Barrington High School football team dropped to 1-3 after losing to Cumberland 31-17 at Victory Field on Friday night, Oct. 9.
The Eagles opened the game with the ball and drove down straight down the field. The drive stalled deep in Cumberland territory, but Tyler Gavopoulos kicked a field goal and gave Barrington an early 3-0 lead.
The Clippers responded with their own drive — an 8-minute march down the field that culminated with a short field goal, tying the game at 3-3 by the end of the first quarter. Cumberland took a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter on a long touchdown pass that out-paced the Eagles’ secondary.
Halfway through the second quarter, Cumberland scored again. The Clippers quarterback run an option play to his right and faked the handoff to his running back. Most of the Eagles defense went to tackle the running back, while the Clippers’ QB pulled the ball back and darted around the right end, sprinting 50 yards for a touchdown.
It appeared Barrington was going to fall behind by three touchdowns at the end of the first half, as Cumberland drove deep into Eagles’ territory with time running down. But the Clippers fumbled the ball and BHS safety Miles Dolan scooped it up and sprinted toward the far end zone. He was tracked down just before scoring, but Barrington quarterback Griffin Ingram punched it into the end just before the half, narrowing the margin to 17-10.
Barrington tied the game in the third quarter, but Cumberland responded with two more scores and knocked off the Eagles, 31-17.
Barrington dropped to ninth place in the Division I standings. The Eagles will play against South Kingstown on Saturday morning, at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Narragansett High School’s field.
