The offshore lobster boat Sakonnet Lobster II returned home Sunday with a most colorful specimen among its catch — an extremely rare calico lobster. Caught in waters about 100 miles out and 570 feet deep, the lobster is a small one, just over a pound, and probably considered a cull, said Doug Mataronas, because it looks like it lost its claws and then grew them back — they are still quite small. They’ll keep it in their tank for awhile and then perhaps donate it to Save The Bay for their display tanks, he said. Sakonnet Lobster II and its predecessor boat, Sakonnet Lobster, have caught colorful lobsters before. They’ve landed blue ones (about one in three million), a calico a few years ago (about one in 20 or 30 million) and, most unusual of all, one that was two-tone lengthwise down the middle — one side bright red, the color of a cooked lobster (perhaps one in 50 million).
