PORTSMOUTH/BRISTOL — A 50-year-old Dartmouth man who jumped from the Mt. Hope Bridge Sunday, March 31, later died from his injuries, police said.

According to Detective Lt. Michael Arnold, Portsmouth Police responded to the bridge around 11:45 a.m. Sunday after getting a report that someone had jumped from the center span.

“Upon arrival there were multiple witnesses who confirmed that a male party was seen jumping from the bridge,” Lt. Arnold said in a prepared statement.

Portsmouth Police, along with the Portsmouth Fire Department and the Bristol harbormaster, responded to the scene with rescue boats. Bristol Police also responded to the scene for assistance.

The man was recovered from the water and brought to a hospital, Lt. Arnold said.

“The man later succumbed to his injuries sustained in the fall,” he said, adding that the Rhode Island Medical Examiners Office is investigating this matter.
