DPW sponsors Earth Day cleanups in East Providence

Events take place throughout April and into May

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Department of Public Works Refuse/Recycling Program is once again sponsoring Earth Day neighborhood cleanups and beautification projects throughout the city during the months of April and May in celebration of Earth Day.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) will once again be waiving disposal (tipping) fees on solid waste for the city’s organized/registered groups involved in Earth Day-related cleanup efforts from now until June 3. These cleanups will collectively be eligible for a tip fee waiver of 10 tons (maximum). This tonnage will not count against the municipality’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) cap. City crews will collect the debris after cleanups and transport material to the RIRRC.

Anyone interested in volunteering, including Scouts or neighborhood groups, for Earth Day cleanup projects or would like additional information, please contact Donna McMahon, DPW, Refuse/Recycling Program Coordinator at 401-435-7710 or via email at dmcmahon@eastprovidenceri.gov. Registered groups receive yard bags for cleanups and work gloves (while supplies last). Students needing community service hours are also encouraged to volunteer.

All debris collected from cleanup events will be pickup for disposal by city crews. DPW can provide work gloves and trash bags. Supplies for Earth Day cleanups made possible with part funding from an Earth Day Grant award received from Narragansett Bay Commission.
