The Barrington High School football team dug out of a 14-7 hole and defeated South Kingstown 35-14 in a Division I game on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Eagles actually opened the game with a big score. On the first play from scrimmage, Zach Borges took a hand-off and raced 58 yards for a touchdown. The early 7-0 lead evaporated quickly, however, as the Rebels scored twice and built a 14-7 advantage.

“We were struggling with their outside sweep,” said Barrington coach Sandy Gorham. “Their kid made some good runs.”

Gorham said his defense made the necessary adjustments, however, and allowed the BHS offense to tie the game and then take the lead. Gorham said Anthony Eaton and Miles Dolan both played well on defense. Eaton was shifted from defensive tackle to defensive end and responded quickly to the new position. Meanwhile, Dolan was extremely active from his linebacker position.

“Miles Dolan continues to play really well at linebacker,” Gorham said. “He does a really good job.”

The stellar defensive effort continued with some new faces in the secondary. Gorham said the coaching staff put Sanders Toman and Griffin Ingram into the cornerback spots, filling in for two injured players.

“They played well. They’re both bigger kids, and they both run well,” Gorham said.

Ingram, who also starts at quarterback for the Eagles, showed just how well he runs when he stepped in front of a South Kingstown receiver, intercepted the pass and sprinted untouched to the end zone for a “pick-six.”

Ingram also scored on the offensive side of the ball. The junior QB ran around the left side of the line for a 29-yard touchdown.

Borges enjoyed a strong day for the Eagles. The junior running back broke away for three touchdown runs.

Gorham said his coaches made key adjustments with the blocking scheme to open up holes for Borges and Ingram.

“They were very aggressive chasing down plays from the back-side,” Gorham said of South Kingstown.

With the win, Barrington improved to 2-4 in Division I standings.
