City public safety personnel have found two deceased kayakers reported missing after taking to Omega Pond in the early morning hours of Friday, July 5.

East Providence Police Department Captain Michael J. Rapoza, Operations Division Commander/Public Information Officer, reported the second of the two men was discovered around 1 p.m. Friday. The first had been found around 10 a.m.  that same morning. 

The East Providence Fire and Police departments led the effort to find the pair after family members of those missing alerted public safety officials of their concern for the where-abouts of the two men around 8:30 a.m., according to Rapoza.

Officials were also alerted to the the unmanned kayaks by residents near the pond, which abuts Roger Williams Avenue in the Rumford section of the city and can access the Seekonk River at what was the former Ocean State Steel property currently being converted into a residential development.

Later Friday morning, East Providence Police announced the recovery of the first male.

Rapoza said an EPPD drone, operated by a trained and licesened officer, discovered the first missing male around 10 a.m. Friday, roughly an hour after making it to the location.

Rapoza, from the scene around noontime Friday, said the search continued for what was believed to be a second missing male.  He noted initial evidence indicated the deaths were accidental. 

Rapoza added EPFD Chief Michael Carey informed him dive teams from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island State Police were soon expected to join in the effort, which included the EPPD drone as well as all EPFD inflatable rescue modules.

That quest ended in the 1 o'clock hour Friday upon the location of the second deceased male.

Rapoza said officials would not be releasing any further information about the dead until notifications to their respective families were made.
